The Chocolate Barista at SCA Expo 2017
In just under a week, a global migration of coffee professionals will meet in Seattle, Washington for Re:Co Symposium and the Global Specialty Coffee Expo. This will be my first time ever attending this annual event. I've been experiencing a rotation of emotions including overwhelmed, stoked, nervous, and anxious (socially), but overall, I'm hyped as hell!
First-time jitters aside, I'm excited for the opportunity to connect with new people from all over the world and reunite with friends I've made already. My whole week, from the moment I land, is packed with lectures, events, and of course, buckets of coffee and parties. None of that includes actually spending time getting to know the city of Seattle and all that it offers! (My best friend and I plan on living our best Grey's Anatomy life the whole time.)
In addition to personally attending Re:Co Symposium, there are a couple of special events The Chocolate Barista will be a part of throughout the week (listed below). Whether it's there or you just see me hanging around, don't hesitate to stop me and say hello!
The All-Inclusive Pre-Expo Party
April 19, 2017 at Cherry Street Public House
Come meet and hang out with everyone coming into town a little early before the Expo begins! Sponsored by Pacific Foods, this social event will be a welcoming for everyone, especially for women and people of color. We're sure it'll be a great time! Food will be on the house and alcohol will be sold for super cheap. After the party's over, meet us at The Sovereign to continue the hangs!

LECTURE: The Chocolate Barista & The Coffeewoman: Intersectionality, Building Influence, And Changing Power Structures
April 22, 2017 in TCC Chelan 2 at 10:30am
The Chocolate Barista has teamed up with The Coffeewoman to further propel the conversation of intersectionality within the coffee industry at Expo. Co-moderated with Tracy Ging (S&D Coffee), we have a powerful panel of women representing a diverse array of positions in coffee— Tymika Lawrence (Genuine Origin), Phyllis Johnson (BD Imports), Liz Dean (Irving Farm Coffee Roasters), Jenn Chen (Freelance Coffee Marketer), and Meister (Cafe Imports). Expect an engaging discussion reflecting on the challenges and setbacks women of color and QT+ women face as coffee professionals and what our next steps can be as individuals and an industry to create more access as we move forward.
SHOW FLOOR: Brewing Five Senses Coffee with Baratza at Booth 2219
April 23, 2017 at 10:30a
While you're perusing the Expo show floor, stop by the Baratza booth to taste some great coffees from Australian-roaster, Five Senses Coffee. I'll be hanging out as the booth barista, so come say hello and let me serve you a cup! Should be fun a time.
