Hello friends! My name is Michelle, and welcome to The Chocolate Barista! Launching this blog has been in the making for well over a year, and I couldn’t be more excited to provide a fun, interactive look into the lifestyle of a coffee professional from my point of view. Coffee has allowed me many experiences with even more people, and I have a passion for sharing and listening to those stories. It’s one of my favorite parts of being a barista.

Drinking coffee was something my mom and I shared, dating back to my childhood. My career in coffee started 4.5 years ago at a small coffee chain in Washington, DC. From the beginning, I enjoyed everything about the process of making coffee. I was obsessed with learning as much information as I could because it fascinated me that a seemingly simple beverage could be so complex. From there, I eventually moved on to a shop in Arlington, Virginia called Bayou Bakery, where I was introduced to the rabbit hole that is specialty coffee via Counter Culture Coffee. Here, I learned the how’s and why’s of producing a great cup. I’d heard that other baristas in the area would gather and have latte art competitions, and once I attended my first one, I knew I’d found something I could stick with.

Since then, I’ve moved and settled into Phoenix, Arizona and have spent the past two years slanging shots at Cartel Coffee Lab. Being a part of the Cartel family and the overall Phoenix coffee community has changed my life. The eccentric array of people I work with, serve, and am served by always inspire me to progress, not only as a coffee professional, but also as an individual. I love where I am, now, but who knows where coffee will take me next!

My goal for this blog is to educate and showcase this corner of the service industry, all while expressing myself creatively. If you’re the type of person who enjoys the overall experience that comes with having a cup of coffee over the technical details, barista or not, then this blog will be for you. I can’t wait to start sharing. I hope you’re excited too!

Stay tuned for way more. See you soon.
